3. Why are there short films?

Why are there short films?

There are no set boundaries on this, although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits".
Sorts films are mainly expressing a view without a big budget, such as don't drink and drive. short films are usually done by new directors or artists trying to get their name out into the industry

what's the point?

The main point for a  short film is to promote the director, it allows them to shows their ability in a short budget films. this allows them to get their name out into the film industry making them have more of a chance to make a film.
as well as this shorts films are usually used to show social, more aspects or the directors views. usually they are used for educational purposes.

How/where are they exhibited

short films are usually uploaded on line such as sights like YouTube, as well as this they are shown in film festival;

Raindance Film Festival
London Short Film Festival• Edinburgh International Film Festival
Manchester International Film Festival
Encounters International Short Film Festival *Oscar qualifying
Leeds International Film Festival
Aesthetica Short Film Festival

Has this always been the case?

the internet was not around in the olden days therefor there were no sights such as youtube so short films were not easy accessible like in the modern day, instead short films would be shown in the cinema before an actual film, this allowed peoples short films to get out there.
